International Geotechnical Online Webinar at the University of Baghdad (Iraq)

11 October, 2020

The Iraqi Scientific of soil mechanics and foundation engineering and civil engineering department at university of Baghdad (Iraq) in collaboration with Asian Technical Committee 19 “Geo Engineering for Conservation of Heritage Monuments and Historical Sites” and Technical Committee TC305 of ISSMGE “Geotechnical Infrastructure for Megacities and New Capitals” hosted a new two-day international online seminar on topic “Historical and modern applications in geotechnical engineering”. More than 90 experts and specialists from the USA, Japan, Greece, India, Iraq, Russia and Kazakhstan participated to the online webinar.

An important goal of this webinar is to offer networking opportunities and promote debate among geotechnical engineers around the world.

Nowadays, sustainable development of old or new cities around the world and using sustainable materials and techniques are the main theme of design and construction or reconstruction of buildings and structures on problematic soils. Participants of the webinar discussed geotechnical problems that can arise from poor underground soil conditions, nearby structures, high water tables and inappropriate underground construction methods.

Professors gave lectures at the webinar incluidng Christos Tsatsanifos on topic “Jacked Box Tunneling: Design and Construction Issues” , Haider Al-Jubair on topic “Improvement of Al-Fao Soft Soil by Deep Soil Mixed Columns: Theoretical Modeling of a case Study”, Victor Kaliakin on topic “Some Recent Applications of Computational Mechanics to Problems Involving Geosynthetics”, Youshinori Iwasaki on topic “Floating Foundations of Giant Gate of Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima ”, Sivakumar Babu on topic “Ananlysis of Municipal solid waste response and its influence on landfill design”, Mahdi Karkush on topic “Sustainability Aspects and Deep Remediation of Contaminated Sites”.

Also, it is important to note that the Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Director of Geotechnical Institute, Chairman of TC-305 (ISSMGE) Zhussupbekov Askar presented a report on the topic "The Development of the Underground Space of a Historical Metropolis".

Representatives of the University of Baghdad thanked the invited experts not only for their active participation, but also for revealing topical topics in the field of geotechnics. In addition, the speakers answered all the questions of the seminar participants.

As a result, it was decided to hold an online webinar of this format on an ongoing basis.
